While I think Greenwald is a brilliant journalist, I disagree with his assessment of Chuck Todd's question. Todd was most likely addressing the need for Americans to sacrifice their ridiculous and unsustainable consumption not their jobs.

I disagree with you on that one. Todd did not come off as asking whether Americans should change their spending habits. I think Glenn's assessment was dead on and it was one of the more tone deaf questions asked by anyone in a long time IMO. MSNBC has not been good for Chuck Todd. I liked him when he worked for The Hotline. He's a little too full of himself since moving to MSNBC.

Chuck todd is a piece of shit. Who is he blackmailing for his job. Or who is his daddy? Who is he blowing?.....whooah. Sorry. I'm just passionate about hammering duchebags. Well in the short term you need Americans to spend in order to get the US economy out of the economic hole. So some amount of consumption is required to allow the economy to rebound. With that basic economic principle in mind, exactly what is Chuck Todd asking people to sacrifice? It's a stupid question and makes no sense given that people are losing their jobs, their homes, their pensions, their savings for things they may or not have done themselves.

The public is already sacrificing, its their tax dollars funding the bailout, those dollars could be better spent.

I went back. Todd said, "Given this new era of responsibility that you are asking for, why haven't you asked for something specific that the public should be sacrificing to participate in this economic recovery."

In my mind the "responsibility" part of that question goes directly to my point. Consumption driven America is, at least, partially to blame but are never asked to stop shopping. Quite the contrary, we are being asked to borrow more so that we can spend, spend, spend.
