I first heard this song by Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot who also wrote it. I was struck by the beauty of Eva's rendition when I heard it from her Imagine album. This song was recorded live at Pearl's on Sept 10, 1994. Eva sang this song solo with her own guitar accompaniment.

This picture of Eva was at Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA and, I believe, when she was in high school.

Early Morning Rain by Eva Cassidy

In the early morning rain with a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
and my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home
and I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain with no place to go

Out on runway number nine
big seven*o*seven set to go
But I'm stuck here on the ground
where the cold winds blow
You can't jump on a jet plane
like you can a freight train
So I'd best be on my way in the early morning rain

Hear the mighty engines roar
see the silver bird on high
She's away and westward bound
far above my home she'll fly
Where the morning rain don't fall
and the sun always shines
She'll be flying past my home
in about three hours time

In the early morning rain with a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
and my pockets full of sand
I'm a long way from home
and I miss my loved ones so
In the early morning rain with no place to go
In the early morning rain with no place to go

  • Beautiful song

Of all the artists - dead or alive, male or female - Eva Cassidy is the best

  • This is one of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot songs and I must have played it a thousand times. Eva's take on the song is nothing like the original but still captures the sadness and loneliness of the lyrics. And I'd like to point out that it's easy to overlook, because of her beautiful voice, that Eva Cassidy was one hell of a guitar player.

  • Beautiful accompagnement to go with that beautiful voice .. my goodness, she's good.

  • Incorrect. Not written by Peter Paul and Mary. Written as stated by the previous commenter, by Gordon Lightfoot in 1964 and performed by Peter Paul and Mary in 1966.

  • There is something both enduring and haunting in this song. Gordon Lightfoot did a great job in writing this song but I love Eva Cassidy's take on it. Her picking and vocals just melt together to form this beautiful expression of longing for home.

  • superb

  • WOW! Beatiful.

  • Next to Gord's, this is the best. It comes to a draw when I try and tally up the number of times I've listened to them both and I only started listening to Eva's version when I discovered it in the early 2000's. Gord's came out on his "Lightfoot" album in the mid sixties.

  • Actually, I know exactly where this picture was taken. It was at Chesapeake City, Maryland. I lived there and recognize the area behind her in the picture.

  • Eva was one of the biggest talents the world has lost and sadly before he became famous. I wished I had had the chance to meet her and listen to her lovely voice live. She lived in Maryland which got the perfect surrounding for her sounds!

  • @nlg516 Wrong, wrong, wrong. Please check google or the credits on albums and CDs. Peter, Paul & Mary didn't write more then one or two of their own songs. They were created by Albert Grossman to cover the songs of current singer/songwriters. They were a commercial venture he created to present softer versions of other musicians. They were great but they were not the creators of much of their music.

  • Originally written by Gordon Lightfoot not Peter Paul & Mary. What more can be said about this song that hasn't already been said? Covered by the likes of Dylan and Presley, it was written in 1964, but Lightfoot drew upon an experience some six years earlier when he was studying music in Los Angeles in 1958 and he found himself at LAX one early morning, more than a little homesick.
