In just its second year of existence, the Shalrie Joseph Soccer Club's under-14 team captured the National Presidents Cup, beating defending champion California, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in Tennessee.
It was an unlikely finish for the squad, which is based in Brookline and has seven players from area communities on its roster. The Lions turned it on at tournament and finished second in both the Massachusetts State Cup and Massachusetts Presidents Cup, earning a berth in the national competition's final round.
The Lions then beat Ohio (6-1) and tied California (0-0) and Florida (1-1) to advance to last weekend's title game.
Zachary Heriveaux, opened the scoring in the first half of the final on a penalty kick after being fouled in front of California's goal. Gaining confidence with the lead, the Lions locked down the midfield.
Jake Rosenkalt of Brookline, Silmar Bueno of Framingham, Brendan Conners of Wellesley and Stanley Elie of Dorchester each scored goals during the tournament. Lance Mayo of Cambridge scored a total 4 goals throughout the tournament earning himself the Golden Boot. - Text taken from Boston.com Article
