i heard that it is always recommended to resurface the head and block before you install a head gasket. they also recommend this because of head warping and such.

How much did it cost you to replace the whole head gasket?

hey, I might buy a 99 prelude with possibly the same problem. could you give me an estimate to how much this would cost to fix?

@civicboy123 the quality of the automatic tensioner is the same of the manual tensioner. neither has a failure rate higher then the other. the whole beef with the automatic tensioner is it gives no warning when it goes bad, it just lets go. but the manual tensioner squeaks so you get a warning.

it would have been easier and maybe cheaper just to buy a jdm h22a, its way better then the american block, i hate those open deck crap blocks,

@jdmsrv93 Your right about the JDM block. I just went the in expensive route to fix this car. Had no problems with it after I fixed it.

the manual tensioner swap is not really necessary...timing belt go like every 50-60 thousand miles. the only reason why people don't like the auto tensioners are they dont make noise when they start to go bad like the manual ones do. other then that the life span on them is still the same and chances are you will only see a tensioner go bad once if at all for the whole time you own the car. i just had a tensioner go on my h22a and bent valves and all that good stuff.

@jrose152 Its cheaper to go the manual tensioner route. The H22a automatic tensioner is a POS! Not fun having to replace the the head, and possibly a piston in this motor.
