the battery is heavy enough to stay in the same position, so the rubber band has to wind up to counter-act this. the rubber band wants to return to normal position, but to do so, it mus unwind the opposite way. you add kinetic energy to it, which then converts into potential energy in the rubber band, and then back to kinetic energy in the opposite direction

I saw this on the best of beakmans world. The battery weight made it stay where it is when it rolled. When the band couldn't twist anymore, the can rolled back. look up beakmans world, it's cool trust me.

the weight of the battery made the battery stay in position and winded up the rubberband. and when the tension was too much for the rubberband the can rolled back undoing the wind-up of the rubberband. Where's my prize??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
