Don't blame Square Enix for all the spinoffs. Blame Disney. This series is probably one of their most profitable.

@church348 actually even re-coded is crucial as it sets the mission they will embark on over the course of KH Dream Drop Distance and KH 3, if they didn't discover the secrets from the journal then they wouldn't have known about the mission to save those left hurting :)

@Auron225 other than recoded all the prequel games are fully necessary for the story, BBS sets up pretty much every event in the entire series from the main villain, to Sora even getting the keyblade. CoM explains everything that happens with sora in between 1 and 2. 358 is Roxas' story and shows more of O XIII's motives. and 3D will be the final set up for 3 with Xehanort regaining full power and becoming Master Xehanort again.
