I spent yesterday in a small province where my wife has some property on Panay Island.
We decided to go out into one of the many
sugar cane fields so that I could do a video using my new digital camera and my old video camera. Getting to the backside of one of the fields was interesting to say the least as you will see in the video.
Looking at the fields from a far they don't look bad and in fact they are quite beautiful. However when you get right into them the heat and humidity is something else.
Next time you put some sugar on your cereal or in your coffee you might think about these boys out there and the hard, hot and humid conditions they are working in.
All in all it was a great day and we had a lot of fun. We took them
goodies to eat and they all enjoyed hamming it up for the cameras.
I'd guess the average age is 20 or 22 and after watching and filming them I realized these "boys" are to be reckoned with if you ever thought about confronting one with a knife. Remember they are using these "ispedind" bolo/machete (sp) type knives 8-10 hours a day. Wages are 80 pesos per day 6 days a week.
Great bunch of kids
We had a great time and I left with a lot more appreciation for sugar.
