Not to be mistaken with the UK group with the same name, the U.S. Flying Machine decided to put the word "ORIGINAL" in their group name. This is their early recording which featured the young voice of James Taylor. It was later re-recorded by JT.

  • I used to have the Springboard International LP of these recordings. The cover had a painting of JT, apparently based on the Sweet Baby James album. This is my favorite song from this album.

  • great version. Never heard it before.

  • @sajwriter ah,see you answerd it already, missed that, I,ve seen the interview live on tv in the time ;-)

  • @YELLOWSNOWEATERPRODU it is about the band, there never died a girl in a plain, send you an interview with Taylor where he,s telling about fire and rain, Suzan had commited suisice, his fight against drugs and the flying machine is about this band, you can,t possible argue with his own word ;-)

  • You have it wrong- like I did. THIS group is the "Flying Machine - in pieces on the ground" that is in the lyrics of his famous Fire and Rain. See youtube video-"Top2000 a Gogo with James Taylor"- He tells us about the 3 themes of Fire and Rain. His friend Susan did not die in a plane crash- she committed suicide.

  • The "Original Flying Machine" was a band (that he did this song with). Later, the rest of the world recognized him after hearing "Sweet Baby James--which was written for his brother Alex's son, James.

  • cho, its was surprising to me to find out that in fire and rain this isnt the flying machine hes talkin about, the flying machine was actually the plane that his girlfriend was flying on, and "pieces on the ground" is when it crashed and she died, originally i thought the same as you.

  • the flying machine he,s singin about in "fire and rain";-)

  • I don't think this is the version from the original vinyl album I have, still great!

  • Thank you....listened to this album when I was ~16yrs old....JT was always incredible.....thank you
