Born in 1953. Toomas Hendrik Ilves obtained a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from Columbia University in 1976 and a Master of Arts in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978.

From 1974 to 1979, Toomas Hendrik Ilves was a teacher and researcher at Columbia University in New York. Subsequently, he worked for a variety of educational institutions, such as the Open Education Center in Englewood, New Jersey, until he joined Radio Free Europe in Munich as a researcher and Head of the Estonian Desk in 1984. He started his diplomatic career in 1993 as Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the United States of America, Canada and Mexico. In 1996, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, a position he held until 2002 with a brief interruption in 1998, when he chaired the North Atlantic Institute. From 2002 to 2004, he acted as a member of parliament of the Republic of Estonia and thereupon, as a member of the European Parliament until 2006. Toomas Hendrik Ilves was elected President of the Republic of Estonia on 23 September 2006 and sworn into office on 9 October 2006.

Toomas Hendrik Ilves was widely decorated and has served as a member of various management and advisory boards for civic groups, among others the Board of Trustees of the Estonian Academy of Arts in the years 2004 to 2006.
