  • Rivals of The Clash? LOL. The Boomtown Rats had a few decent songs, but they were never strong enough or punk enough to rival the Clash.

  • False - died of a heart attack due to an "undiagnosed congenital heart defect." FACE!

  • @waterloo2003 He said they were rivals in regards to selling records. I do not believe that Bob Geldoff thinks that the Boomtown Rats were better or more talented than the Clash.

  • wake up Bob..bubbling yourself as rival of The Clash makes you the biggest wanker...there is no rival to Clash...The Clash is the ONLY..

  • @salvadory All the albums you list are fantastic, no doubt all are classics, and should be in the collection of anyone who is into punk. But unfortunately the Jam and the Damned were under-appreciated in the US at that time (which was when most people here were into crap like Huey Lewis and the News), whereas London Calling put the Clash onto a different plane.

  • @corkbender i would just add that while the clash released give em enough rope london calling and sandinista(my fav clash album) the jam released all mod cons setting suns and sound affects- id actually be hard pressed to pick between the two bands then though london calling is probally the strongest of the lot- and both bands ended on their biggest albums but the quality wasnt quite up to the past though i love both the gift and combat rock- throw in the damned and the uk was never better

  • @salvadory The Jam were great, and you're correct, they weren't punk, although their pop-side didn't emerge until some of the later records. That said, the early Jam stuff was a lot harder than any of the Rats stuff IMO.

As for competition, London Calling put the Clash were up there in the stratosphere in terms of popularity, something which the Rats could only dream of.

  • @corkbender the only rivals to the clash at the time were the Jam - as far as quality! Though obviously the jam were more mod and pop than punk-

  • Oh what I would do to turn back time and see him live. I would pay all the money in the world to see my hero. He's an absolute god to me. I'm getting his portrait tattooed on me this year :) R.I.P Joe <3

  • @TheRubiiie Joe considered himself Scottish, English and Turkish. In that order.

  • El mundo lloró cuando Strummer murió...

  • fuck bob geldof
