A film I made for the lads in the band on std. 8 ciné 45 years ago! We were at Carnoustie, just outside Dundee at the time of the Polio outbreak. My second two-week camp out of the 7 years I had in the TA band. We doubled as the York Postal Military Band as most of us were postmen.
These fortnights away were a complete break from the hazards of bringing up a young son. We were paid as a regular AND paid from work.

The music:- The March of the Royal Army Service Corps, The Road and the Miles to Dundee - Andy Stewart, Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Greensleeves and Fantasie by Sylvius Leopold Weiss.

Cauld winter was howlin', o'er moor and o'er mountain
And wild was the surge, of the dark rolling sea
When I met about daybreak, a bonnie young lassie,
Wha asked me the road, and the miles to Dundee

Says I' my young lassie, I canna' weel tell ye,
The road and the distance, I canna' weel gie,
But if you'll permit me, tae gang a wee bit-tie,
I'll show ye the road, and the miles to Dundee

At once she consent-ed, and gave me her arm,
Ne' er a word did I speir, wha the lassie micht be
She appeared like an angel, in feature and form,
As she walked by my side, on the road to Dundee

At length wi' the Howe, O' Strath-mar-tine behind us
The spires O' the toon, in full view we could see,
She said gen-tle sir, I can nev-er for-get ye
For show-ing me far, on the road to dundee

This ring and this purse take to show I am grateful,
And some simple token I trust you'll gie me,
And in times to come I'll remember the laddie,
Wha showed me the road and the miles to Dundee

I took the gowd pin, from the scarf on my bos-om,
And said "keep ye this, in re-mem-brance O' me",
Then brave-ly I kissed, the sweet lips O' the lassie
E'er I part-ed wi' her, On the road to Dundee

So here's to the lassie, I ne'er can for-get her
And il-ka young laddie, that's list'ning to me,
O nev-er be sweer, to convoy a young lassie
Though it's only to show her, the road to Dundee

Not quite the same words but close enough!

  • Really charming. Thanks for posting this. I did my night patrol training at Barry Budden sometime around 1977/8 so it brings back memories. Interesting to see what crossing the Firth of Forth was like before the road bridge was built too!

  • I am wondering how many of my pals are still alive as I just am! I was a mere boy of 29. Thanks for viewing! Alexander

  • Thanks for showing us this. I'm from this area although this was filmed slightly before my time. Some things have not changed much.

  • Buddon...not Budden.

  • All hail the amateur film makers. What an amazing piece of work. I live in this area and it was a pleasure to watch this. Thanks.

  • Great Vid.

  • Didn't the old Ford Prefect do well!

  • I remember that year as well, Bill, as the year Dundee won the league, and yes, Tutties Neuk hasn't changed much.

  • 46 years on and Tutties looks the same!

  • and a terrific sound, also

  • An absolutely classic piece of film, sir. My window looks out over Monifieth to both Barry & Buddon camps. I walk regularly across the ranges a highlight & lowlight is to visit the lighthouses.
