In March of 2008, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott showed that he was serious about enforcing the state's information destruction requirement when CVS was fined $315,000 for discarding personal information without destroying it first, His office has gone on to prosecute many more such cases since then, including fining a hospital over $990,000 for discarding medical information without destroying it. CVS went on to receiive a $2,250,000 fine from Health and Human Services and the Federal Trade Commission for improper information disposal at multiple sites.
