George Gombossy's remarkable 40-year career as investigative reporter for the Hartford Courant came to an abrupt end after his investigation into a mattress company that happens to be an advertiser of the newspaper.
Gombossy, who now operates the CTWatchdog.com website, tells Howard Kurtz that he wants his former employer, as well as its sister television outlet, WTIC-TV Fox 61, to return to their "high ethical standards", and that he "absolutely" plans to sue the paper.
The sad part is that except for a few competing suburban papers like the Journal Inquirer of Manchester, and the New Britain Herald, Hartford is 1 paper town, which means the paper's management can have no fear of firing someone who goes after one of the paper's advertisers. The people of Hartford, as well as those who have misfortune of buying from Sleepy's, are the losers because of this. I hope Mr. Gombossy prevails in his lawsuit.

If more news people had this man's integrity, maybe the press wouldn't be suffering as much as it is today. People would begin trusting the printed word again.
