It's much easier to hear a song by someone first, then experiment with it to find a more suitable style, rhythm, key, etc. than being the first to actually do it - or in other words to be the leader.
It took me quite some time to be able to accept the Grayson version, but I did. It’s because he is a great singer and it’s a great song. I'm sure if ONJ's Producer had Grayson's version first to listen to, it probably would have sounded more R&B.
Nevertheless, both of these singers are very talented, they are singing in tune, and there is nothing technically “wrong” with either version.
The Record Producer (or artist) chose to do the recordings in different styles - usually to match the rest of the LP. I agree that this song is more suited for a laid back R&B groove, but to say that Ms..Newton-John is singing this poorly is just not true. It’s the radically different voice tones that will shock the ear, it shouldn’t be the singer.Cont
Olivia recorded this song first and it wasn't the featured lead single off of her LP or wasn’t a hit. I'm sure the sound of ONJ’s version to a person who knows only the Grayson version with deep male voices throughout, must have experienced a similar shock as when I first heard his version! After knowing ONJ's for a year and then hearing Grayson’s for the first time on the radio, I honestly thought that the DJ was accidentally playing ONJ at 33rpm’s instead of the normal 45rpm’s!
@napalm5 what makes you a critic?

Nice- but can't top Grayson Hugh's original version. The SOUND and groove of his original version is just magic.
