"At approximately 0410 on May 14, 1943, on her second run from Sydney to Port Moresby, Centaur was torpedoed by an unsighted submarine. The torpedo struck Centaurs port-side oil fuel tank, approximately two meters below the waterline, creating an eight to ten meter hole, igniting fuel, and setting the ship on fire from the Bridge aft. Many of those aboard were immediately killed by the concussion or burned to death.
"Centaur rolled to port, sinking bow first. Lifeboats were unable to be launched, due to the speed of the Centaurs sinking. At the time of the attack, most crew and passengers were asleep and had little chance to escape.
"Centaur would sink in three minutes.
"There were only 64 survivors of 332 personnel aboard."
One of the more unrecognised, if not unknown, ship in the annals of WW2 naval history. May the brave men and women onboard the Centaur be always remembered for their endless courage and compassion...
