A Japanese enka song, sung by Meiko Kaji (梶芽衣子). This is second track from her album 'Otoko Onna Kokoro no Aika' (English: "Sad Songs in Men and Women and Their Hearts"), APR1974 Teichiku CF48. The song is also released on her best of album 'Zenkyoku Shu'.

'Yume wa Yoru Hiraku' (夢は夜ひらく, English: "Dreams Unfold at Night") is originally released in 1966, and more than 20 singer has sung their own version, for example Mari Sono (1966), Keiko Fuji (1970), and Kan Mikami (1972). Meiko Kaji's cover version is from the year 1974. The song was composed by Komei Sone. The original lyrics was written by Masao Ishizaka.

This is fan made music video. I've edited video clips from a Hong Kong film '2046', directed by Wong Kar-wai, starring (in this video) Faye Wong, Takuya Kimura, and Carina Lau.

For me, '2046' is the best movie ever made! It is a perfect film in many ways: a combination of romantic drama and science fiction, great emotions and amazingly beautiful images. On my video, I wanted to express a dream-like athmosphere. I think that we all live in a dream, and life is just a dream...

The Japanese lyrics have been translated into English by Kaoru Kitamura (kaoru0122). Thank you very much, my friend. Domo arigato gozaimasu, Kaoru-chan!

The lyrics in Japanese and English:

芽衣子の夢は夜ひらく
Meiko no Yume wa Yoru Hiraku
(Meiko's Dreams Unfold at Night)

泣くため生まれてきたような
Naku tame umarete kita you na
(Though I don't have any attachment)

こんな浮世に未練など
Konna ukiyo ni miren nado
(to this floating world)

これっぽっちもないくせに
Koreppocchi mo nai kuse ni
(to where I was born only to cry)

夢は夜ひらく
Yume wa yoru hiraku
(Dreams unfold at night)

長い黒髪断ち切って
Nagai kurokami tachi kitte
(There is someone to whom)

送りつけたいやつがいる
Okuritsuketai yatsu ga iru
(I want to sever my long black hair and send it)

あいつ不幸か 幸せか
Aitsu fukou ka shiawase ka
(Is he unhappy or happy?)

夢は夜ひらく
Yume wa yoru hiraku
(Dreams unfold at night)

しょせん男は おだて鳥
Shosen otoko wa odatedori
(After all, men are flattering birds)

しょせん女は なみだ貝
Shosen onna wa namidagai
(After all, women are shells of tears)

抱いて抱かれて つまずいて
Daite dakarete tsumazuite
(Embracing, being embraced, and tumbling over)

夢は夜ひらく
Yume wa yoru hiraku
(Dreams unfold at night)

星は流れて どこへ行く
Hoshi wa nagarete doko e yuku
(Where will the star go after falling?)

あたし流れて どこへ行く
Atashi nagarete doko e yuku
(Where will I go after floating?)

あてもない身の鼻歌に
Atemonai mi no hanauta ni
(For the hum of someone without a place to go)

夢は夜ひらく
Yume wa yoru hiraku
(Dreams unfold at night)

泣くため生まれてきたような
Naku tame umarete kita you na
(Though I don't have any attachment)

こんな浮世に未練など
Konna ukiyo ni miren nado
(to this floating world)

これっぽっちもないくせに
Koreppocchi mo nai kuse ni
(to where I was born only to cry)

夢は夜ひらく
Yume wa yoru hiraku
(Dreams unfold at night)

夢は夜ひらく
Yume wa yoru hiraku
(Dreams unfold at night)

  • Thanks you for this beautiful video and song. I discovered Meiko Kaji through Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill, 1+2" films. I began researching her life, music, and film career. To me, as a Caucasian Texas cowboy, Meiko Kaji is one of the all time great singers. I love her beautiful, enchanting voice, as well as her enigmatic charm, magnetism, charisma. Also like "2046," including the performances by Gong Li and Ziyi Zhang. Thanks so much for bringing back the lovely Meiko Kaji. I love this lady!

  • @HorstRolande Dear Jörg,

Nice to meet you, and many thanks for your kind comment. Yes, I checked your YouTube friends and I noticed we have really some common friends here. For example, David Wong (gonenow2007) was a friend of us both. May he rest in peace... I can also see we like same kind of music: Enka, Chinese music, Teresa Teng, Meiko Kaji, Tchaikovsky, and so on. Many common things! Let's keep in touch in the future. Be blessed.

    Kindly, Teisuka

  • @boogetman65 Hiya, Boogetman!

You have a wonderful week. Thanks, Teisuka.

  • @MrSuomi2010 Hi again, Anton. I know only that あいつの好きそなブルース (Aitsu no suki sona burusu) is a new Meiko mini album, including 7 songs. I think it will be an old style and familiar enka music. You're right, her comeback-single 'Onna wo Yametai / Omoide Biyori' (2009) was a great record. I am glad that Meiko still continue singing. Let's wish her good luck! ~Teisuka

  • @teiska123 This is a working weekend for me, but her voice as refreshing sea breath)) Do you know about her new mini-album release (on 25 of May) - Aitsu no Suki na Blues? As Onna wo Yametai single shows her voice remained strong and passionate so I ordered hew album without any hesitation. Anton

  • @MrSuomi2010 Thank you for the nice comment, and welcome to my channel, Anton. I am glad to see another Russian person here. :) Yes, Meiko Kaji is amazing and soulful singer, I agree your every word. Have a nice weekend, and please "call" again. ~Teisuka

  • There a lot of kind words and beautiful thank-you were said. I fully agree with them. Meiko Kaji is amazing singer, artist and woman, of course; her charming voice and enigmatic appearance can catch everyone's soul. Thank you very much from Yaroslavl)

  • @boogetman65 You're so welcome, and thank you very much for the nice comment, my friend. Alright, now you love Meiko Kaji, too?? Great! Ah, but who is Harry Connick Jr.? Okay, I checked him from Wikipedia, and now I know... Hahaha! Again, thank you for visiting on my channel, and have a great weekend, "Chinese cowboy"! 哈哈哈!^_^ Teisuka

  • @meilanfa Hi Meilan. You're welcome, and I thank you for the nice comment. You're right: Meiko-san has a dark and smoky (and sexy) voice, a bit similar as Michiko-chan has. ^_^ Maybe she could also sing this song someday, especially because I know she really love this song. I wish you a nice rest of the week, Meilan. Take care, and good luck with your own lovely videos/cover songs! ~Teisuka

  • Oh my goodness! What a great singer and song. Thank you for introducing a great tune and singer I have missed.

I love the artistic style of this production, in deed. Just in time for my return after absent for about a week. I can replay it for so many times. By the way, I thought that one guy in the beginning was Harry Connick Jr. before I read the description. Hahahah !! :)

Thank you for the great work, and the note. Thanks again, Teisuka. Weekend is coming very soon. :))

  • Hi Teisuka, thanks for sharing this beautiful video clips and song. When I first listen to it, I thought it was Michiko-san who sang it. It kinds of sound a little like our dearest friend's voice. The song is so soft and tender and Faye Wong is so cute. What a great job! Cheers -^^- Meilan.

    I like it. 谢谢! ^_^

  • @asnar0365 Dear Goemon-san,

Thank you very much for your kind comment. I appreciate it. Yes, I just wanted to bring together some things which I like very much (this song + this movie + Meiko + Faye). I am glad to hear you find Meiko's version is better and more cute. Surely I agree with you! To my mind, Meiko's cover is "sexy in a cute way", right? ^_^ Hai, Kaoru-san made a nice translation. I think this is the first English translation of this song in the entire Web!

    Teisuka

  • This is an excellent vudeo. Good combinational of Meiko and Faye Wong! To be honest, I hadn't realized the value of this song until you uploaded it. Fuji Keiko also sang the same song and most of Japanese including me associate this song with Keiko. In my opinion, Meiko is better. The way she sings is cuter than that of Keiko. I confess that it's my first time to listen to Meiko's song. I became her fan. Please send my best regards to Kaoru-san. Her translation is nice.

    Paul Goemon

  • @teiska123 ok! хахаха :)

I am happy to see you here. Thank you very much for the nice comment. Please, spend a wonderful week and be happy as a heaven's bird, okay? Xaxaxa! ^_^
