Isn't it saying life itself is like a war? There's always struggles, fighting, picking sides. I'd say it was more about life & death and it happens to be set during a war. A war setting allows exploration of the topics of life & death.When I stop and think about it, one of the main characters (Caviezel?? Muscular guy--character's name escapes me) he had what appears to be a calm center at peace with the world even as he walks around dying soldiers...he's calm. Amazing.

Yes I agree. I suspect it's because Caviezel's character (Witt) had a developed a profound understanding of death and didn't seem to fear it. As a result he was able to calmly accept his fate.

so the others are not "thinking person's war films"? There are LOTS of good war movies. Das Boot is pretty high up there.

haha nah, it's not something that I experience on a personal level. I see people get thumbs down for good comments so I tried the opposite. It didn't work, oh well.
