Communitarianism does not suggest that the individual has no value, it suggests that the individual can only make sense of himself through his membership in different groups. Think about ways we describe individuals, they involve group membership. You cannot understand yourself just as an individual you understand yourself as belonging to particular groups (occupational etc). Thus groups can make claims, not just individuals......

I completely agree with A, but how exactly does B follow from A? If I were a member of the homosexual community (which I am not, although I consider myself homosexual), can I make claims on the grounds of my membership in that community?

The idea is that if you accept that groups have ontological meaning, that they are not just reducible to their mere parts, than there is something that is added, so that some sort of claims can be made. Most often this revolves around a consideration of the ends of a group being more than the aggregation of the ends of the individuals who make up that group.

Well, that certainly clarifies your point. In spite of what I have written earlier, my idea of a good society is actually quite old-fashioned. I understand and value the role of other people in a person's life and feel that this is something that is missing from our lives in modern societies. But I also feel that what is referred to as "community" by some followers of communitarianism may be a Troyan horse, a pretty package which conceals an unpleasant surprise.
