@NezorePresents It doesn't have a consciousness, if that's what you mean. The closing mechanism happens automatically, so the venus fly trap can not decide whether to close or not.

@flamingmyass If you stick your finger into a trap it will also close - but it'd never be strong enough to hurt it. In contrary, this could damage the plant because closing the trap uses up its energy (which it won't get back because it doesn't gain anything to eat).

@fuzzymatt292 It uses acid indeed, but you must imagine the process much slower... (Devouring an insect takes the plant 7-10 days!) And the plant will not even TRY to devour your finger or any insect which is too big for the leaf. The acid couldn't stay in a leaf which was not entirely closed. So, even if you put your finger into it and let it there the whole night without moving, the leaf just will open up again after some hours...
