AVONDALE, Ariz. — Ryan Newman broke a 77-race Sprint Cup winless streak Saturday night at Phoenix International Raceway, taking the lead after a late caution and holding off Jeff Gordon in a two-lap shootout.

Kyle Busch was cruising to what would have given him a weekend sweep when a caution flag came out with three laps remaining. When the lead-lap cars pitted, Busch took four tires and came out eighth — behind six cars that took only two tires and Jimmie Johnson, who also took four and was seventh out of the pits.

Gordon beat everybody out of the pits, but spun his tires on the restart in a green-white-checker finish. Newman then charged inside and took the lead, and held on for his first victory since the 2008 Daytona 500.

"It's been a long time coming for me to get to Victory Lane," Newman said. "I'm gracious to be here. This is the most emotional victory I've ever had in my entire career just because it's been so long."

Newman, driving the No. 39 Chevrolet owned by Tony Stewart, had led only two laps before the final two. That lead came during the first caution only 21 laps into what became a 378-lap race — instead of the scheduled 375, already 63 more than last spring — on the oddly shaped mile track.

"I couldn't believe it. I saw the white flag and I was like I don't have that far to go," Newman said. "Every restart, I had been on the inside and I couldn't get going. ... I held my line and got a good shot off Turn 2. That's all we needed."

It was Newman's 14th career victory in 303 starts, but the first time a No. 39 car has been to Victory Lane (286 races).

  • Thank you for supporting Texas Motor Speedway and we hope to see you at the Samsung Mobile 500 this race week.

but if you not here during race week watch our channel for the race highlights and behind the scenes coverage.

  • @Shabutie97 I actually do realise how difficult Nascar is. Marcos himself has repeatedly said, the competition is incredibly difficult every single lap. I have stayed quiet on Ambrose so far in Sprint Cup till this year. But if you analyse his performances this year, he's definately on an upward spiral. At this stage it's just my opinion, but it's a bit of fun meanwhile. I may be wrong, we'll wait and see.

    Meanwhile check out this clip.

  • @wha65 The self-inflicted penalties are unexcusable. You are not realizing how competitive this sport is. Ryan Newman is not even in the top 12 right now. I think Ambrose is very talented, but not top 12.

  • @Shabutie97 I wouldn't mind having a good bet with you Shab.

Unfortunately i'm down here in OZ. Marcos has been very fast in the 7 races. They are close to getting it right. JTG Racing just needs to tweak their Michael Waltrip Racing engines a bit better for reliability and no more pit lane speeding penalties ( twice at Bristol ) Also quicker pit stops. But when they do......

Don't forget Marcos has also 2 road races to come mate. lol....

  • Is it me or does it seem like the backmarkers always seem to lose it right when the race is close to being done?? Have not seen too many NASCAR races that have ended without seeing a caution with less then 10 to go. I am willing to be that NASCAR is paying off the smaller teams to crash out or cut tires

  • if only jeff didnt spin the tires he wouldve won
