From the 1967 Album Love In A Mist. One of the three songs on the album written by her singer/songwriter friend Donovan. I wonder did he write the somg about her? The song "In The Night Time" also on the album he gave to Marianne and did not record it himself untill many years latter.

Young Girl Blues lyrics:

It's Saturday night, it feels like a Sunday in some ways.
If I had any sense I'd maybe go away for a few days.
Be that as it may, I can only say I am lonely,
I am but a young girl, working my way through the phonies.

Coffee on, milk gone, a sad light and fading,
Myself I touch, but not too much, I hear it's degrading.

The flowers on my stockings are wilting away in the midnight.
The book I am reading is one man's opinion of moonlight.
My skin is so white, I'd like maybe to go to bed soon,
Closing my eyes, if I'm to rise up before noon.
High heels, car wheels, the losers are grooving.
My dream, strange scene images are moving.

My friends, they are making a pop star or two every evening.
I know that scene backwards, they can't see the patterns they're weaving.
My friends they are models but I soon got over that one.
I sit in my one room, a little brought-down in London.

Coffee on, milk gone, a sad light and fading,
Myself I touch, but not too much, I hear it's degrading.

La la la la la, la la la la la la la la la.La la la la la,
la la la la la la la la la.La la la la, la la la la la ...

  • After all these years just realized that the words are different to what I thought they were. Sounded like she was singing "......a sad LIFE but fading" Which gives it a much darker meaning

  • @DirkjeA Accepted. It is entirely a matter of taste. As both versions are peerless, I guess it comes down to which particular mood I am in at the time. The fact that the song is about a girl, it becomes more personal to have a girl musing over her own circumstances that does it for me. But it's her voice, and the arrangement, especially the acoustic guitar that makes it so special. A similar effect can be found on Sarah McLachlan's 'Gloomy Sunday'. Spine tingling stuff.

  • Half of her records havent been released to itunes. Its maddening.

  • just stellar, the arrangement, vocals, arrangement of the pictures for the video brings it to life. a beautiful ceremony of life and acceptance/realization of the plot.

  • Sammy Hagar does an incredible version of this song on his live album. Weird to think of it, but find it on youtube and listen.

  • Young Girl Blues

  • Whoa! I have not been able to get into any of Marianne's songs, can't understand the hype, but this song rocks! I prefer it to Donovan's take. I'm sure the tasteful production doesn't hurt.

  • @palbook That is a matter of taste. This song suits her, and she sings it beautiful, but I prefer the original by Donovan, however I do understand why you like this one.

  • enchanting..never knew this song was out there, thanks so much!

  • palbook - me too, and just the SOTS broadcast to listen to. Thank you so much crazedwitch

  • One of Marianne's best early songs. Thanks. X
