Ooooh! Yes! I had the honor of watching Kansas perform live during their Voice Drum Device Tour in 2003. Robby Steinhardt blew me away on violin!

Oh yes. There've been quite a few. Jethro Tull is the brightest example, but Heart also includes the flute on a few tracks, and Anne Wilson still plays the flute onstage during concerts (at least she did when I saw her in Jackpot, Nevada in 2004). It was much more common in the '70's, but it's unique flavor is often overlooked in current rock recipes. It's refreshing because it's rare.
