Madrid, July 5, 2010. Iberia Flight 6187 Madrid to Washington Dulles. Engine failure on take-off. Fuel dump over Madrid with return to Madrid. Incident handled professionally and competently by Iberia flight crew. Upon landing, a new aircraft was assigned and efficiently reboarded with a total delay of only about 2 1/2 hours.
Interesting...and very well written and appreciative description. You must not be American, otherwise you probably would have sensationalized the situation and threatened to sue the airline.

@hormigaZ and also the plane will be too heavy to land safely

pilot doesn't necessarily dump the fuel in case of an emergency he or she will do it only when the plane is too heavy to make the landing safe

@DDam0n Thanks for your quick answer, I did not know planes arent capable of full load landings.

@hormigaZ If they did not dump fuel the plane would be too heavy to land and the gear could collapse.

Could someone explain me why when there is an engine failure pilots always dump the fuel? Is it only because of the risk of it exploding in a crash during a emergency landing? Thanks
