Peter Hitchens talks about the need for a new political compass in a world where traditional boundaries between the Left and Right no longer exist.
Left-wingers backed the invasion of Iraq and Tories campaign for civil liberties yet conventional wisdom insists on operating as if the age-old divisions between political parties still apply, argues journalist, author and broadcaster Peter Hitchens.
In his new book The Broken Compass How British Politics lost its way, Peter Hitchens, who writes for the Mail on Sunday, argues that the real divide is between politicians and the electorate and is both a threat to Parliament and to society.
Peter Hitchens takes on the conformist media for continuing to adhere to such obsolete notions of Left and Right and calls for the re-establishment of proper adversarial politics based on principle.

Peter Hitchens is a journalist, author and broadcaster who worked on the Daily Express for most of his career. He resigned on principle in protest at the takeover by Richard Desmond and now writes for the Mail on Sunday.

  • This is the man that writes regulary for the daily mail.. Enough said there.

What Chris Hitchens is SO much better!

  • I like Peter even if I do not agree with him on everything. I think the difference between him and his brother is that he, unlike C-Hitchens, does not spend his time debating simply to raise his own profile as an intellectual. I'm talking about how Christopher relentlessly attacks ALL religion, even Buddhism, as an evil well and above its true extent; e.g. C-Hitchens arguing that Hitler was a practising Christian with very spurious evidence indeed.

  • @BewareTheBeast

We'd love to see the back of you.

  • "its the English that subsidises thew rest of the political union."

Sorry to break this to you but the 'English' is not a monolithic whole. It is free born British individuals who subsidise the Union. Your remark is as fatuous as SNP drivel about 'Scotland’s Oil.'

  • Peter Hitchens is one of the few political commentators in Britain today with a backbone. Whether one agrees with his conclusions or not is a different matter however you have to admire his clearness of thinking. For what it is worth, he is absolutely correct here regarding the dulling conformity of modern day politics and society in general.

  • Christopher Hitchens is a New World Order/Neo Con shill

  • Britain today: Labour's lax morality has helped standards crash through the floor. Just look around you.

But people are truly waking up, not with just a little help from the Web.

  • Hey Salt.., what makes you think Brown suits the British?

He may suit the Scots, Irish and Welsh, but he doesn't suit the English, and its the English that subsidises thew rest of the political union.

  • @saltnvinegar77 lol kindof agree with you
