It took 40 years for this version of LUCKY LUCKY ME to come to light.
The funk Brothers recorded the track on 27th January 1965 and Jimmy's vocals were added 2 weeks later on 9th February, then canned.
The Funk's track was released as ALL FOR YOU in 1965, credited to Earl Van Dyke & The Soul Brothers.
Marvin Gaye's version was released as a single in 1994, after being discovered during a cataloguing exercise.

  • By far the best rendition of this song. Marvin who?

  • The backing track reminds me a bit of Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel". I wonder if he heard this version?

  • Superb!!!!

  • class

  • Notice Jamerson's octaves at the beginning....This technique was used a lot in disco basslines in the 70's

  • Thank you for posting this, I have the Funk Brothers recordings(original album and the Best Of CD), I figured the "All For You" track was a originally a vocal track, also thanks for hipping us to Marvin Gaye's version(It does sound like a tune he would do), anyway, I do like James Jamerson's bass playing on this tune....
