  • The Battle of Athelstaneford was recorded by several Scottish historians: John of Fordun in his Chronicle of the Scottish People and by Walter Bower , . Bower was born in Haddington, close to the site of the Battle of Athelstaneford and wrote his Chronicle of Scotland. Both these books were compiled from earlier written documents and from oral tradition. Later John Major, Hector Boece and George Buchanan , John Spottiswood and John Leslie all repeated the story.

  • Great video! The roots of the Battle of Athelstaneford and the story of the Saltire go back to Constantine the Great who visited York. In 312 AD Constantine fought Maxentius, a rival emperor, at the Milvian Bridge in Rome. On the night before, Constantine looked into the setting sun for a sign and saw instead the Greek letters Chi Rho (XP) superimposed, first two letters of Christ. Later that night he had a dream in which he was told to use the Chi Rho as a military standard in battle.

  • A fantastic professional film that should have folk flocking here! Do the council/ tourist offices know about this?
