Sandra was an innovator & and many followed her style. Wham-O called her back to judge numerous contests and she judged fairly. No one knew at the time, but she had a few medical conditions which caused her pain & fatigue. She took medication often & was very weak & limited her performances. We have great pics, autographs. Sandra is a mother of one & grandmother of 2. It's great to see the vid up. Hello to the Wham-O family. God bless everyone.
I'm related to Sandra Gaylord, the one in the light blue leotards, the first African American to win. She had a friendship with Lori & Melody. Melody was helpful and gracious. Wonderful family. Lori's friendship extended until they were into their twenties. Sandra taught other hula hoopers and gave her time to charities & those who were less fortunate.(part 1)
I should probably respond to Carycomic's post (below). I was never on the board of Wham-O (although I used to judge Hula Hoop contests for them) - if I was, I'd have pushed for more promotion of Hula Hoops as they're so much fun! During the 1980s I did quite a bit of hooping in the Netherlands and the UK (where I met my husband Ian). Hope people enjoy this video - it was fun making it with Lori and Sandra and the Wham-O team!
All know all these three wonderful women. They taught me a lot, especially the one in the dark leotard with pigtails -- my big sis and hula hooper extraordinaire, Melody McLaren. She was a pioneer with hula hoops and I owe a lot to her. Thanks, Mel!
