The reason there is such a difference is because most modern schools teach a "folklore show" style maculele where there are more coreographed movements than the true form practiced by the people on their own time which has quite alot of more freestyle and room for creativity.

this maculele looks very different than what i learned to play. This is obviously old footage. I guess that contemporary capoeira schools have started to become more similar in how they do things.
