Actually what Obama said was that Law abiding citizens have the right to arms themselves. But if a state or local government wants to impose a gun law/ban it is there rights.

And I agree, and I also think Obama is going to destroy America. Stop taking things out of context. You're just as bad as the liberals you claim to hate.

The underlying theme is that freedom does not come from an armed population but from a collective state of mind and is entrenched in a nation that has practiced democratic free market principles. If Americans wish to have guns and the majority of the population is for it, there isn't much of an issue, despite that there are fewer gun related deaths in European nations than the US. (Lastly, remember that constitutional amendments are not written in stone, take it from a law student.)

This whole notion that as long as the people are armed, their personal rights will not be infringed upon by the state dates back to when the only difference between a soldier and a commoner was that one carried a weapon. To defend oneself against the state in a matter than ensures safety, the populace needs tanks etc. Take the Patriot Act, for instance. A gross example of government taking away the rights of citizens. There is no such equivalent act in Europe despite stricter gun laws.
