My high school coach taught the same stuff as Gwynn does, and it surprises me that I'm still able to hit. Thankfully I've been correcting my swing. I'm sure he teaches the same stuff to SDSU hitters which is a strong indicator to why they have been lacking offensively.
I think the jump at the end of his swing is because he appears to lock out his front hip, watch his front toe, it never opens up. I hate to criticize one of the best hitters ever, but that's probably why he didn't have very much power, he's generating back hip and upper body rotational force but isn't rotating his front hip with it, that means that it has to come around at some point, so it forces itself around after the swing and causes him to jump.
I was wondering if you knew of any drills that are good for helping a batter learn to shift his weight correctly. I need a drill to get me to stride with even shoulders. Sure I can think this out as I swing but I want to ingrain this into muscle memory so it's natural and I don't have to think about it.
My attempt at keeping my back foot weighted I lean back with my upper body. I drop my rear shoulder. This is causing me to lose power and like you said in another video "anchor the back hip". I am losing tremendous power by doing this. If you look at the great hitters when they stride their spine is neutral. What I mean by neutral is perpendicular to the ground. If you draw a line from base of neck to belt buckle you will see that it's perpendicular to ground. My spine isn't neutral
Good stuff man. I am a believer that if you can fix the lower body mechanics then everything should for the most part be on autopilot. Sure you can develop bad upper body tendencies but I think a lot can be fixed with just the correct weigh transfer and your upper body being balanced. What I mean by this is it's important to have your upper body balanced as the weight shifts. I developed a problem of trying to keep the weight back and I tilt my upper body back
