This is a brief video documentary on experimental filmmaker and painter Jeff Scher, that I made for my SpeedCine.com website (now closed). Jeff has had a successful career showing his films in museums and film festivals around the world and exhibiting his paintings in many prestigious galleries. More recently, he was asked to make a short movie every month for the Opinion Page of the New York Times online, which he calls "The Animated Life." Doing this "blog" has increased his viewership enormously and has changed the way he makes movies.

  • I must have come in the back door. I did not know of Scher's work through the NY Times, but now I'm goign to have to check out all the Times videos which I've been missing.

  • Well that makes me happy. I am in awe of Jeff and I'd be very honored if this little video could lead more people to his work.

  • Yeah, it's beautiful. I like how Jeff stayed true to his style and it's wonderful that a guy like Dylan appreciated his talent and just let him do a Jeff Scher video. Somebody else might have followed the song more literally, but Jeff took it in a unexpected direction. It's very moving.

  • @TigerTheFrog I heard of Jeff Scher by watching one of his shorts on the Short Stories project by Showtime. I'm a film major, so I've taken an experimental film class, but while some (not all) of the films I saw seemed pretentious, Scher's works feels alive and very interesting to watch.

  • Your documentary is as creative and talented as your films. I remember seeing 'Summer Retreat' in the NYTimes online and sharing it with friends and family. Great to see what you look like and hear your voice!

  • Fantastic documentary. Congratulations on making and thank you for sharing!

I'm a experimental animator too, and just loves Scher films. Hope one day meet him :)

  • Well, today we know who the "musical hero" is for Scher--Bob Dylan. I LOVE Scher's animation for the Little Drummer Boy video just released today.
