The stigma surrounding ideas collectively referred to as “conspiracy theories” prevents people from thinking critically about the true intentions of their political leaders & the policies enacted by their govt. It denotes any uncomfortable truth, explanation or fact that's out of step with the govt's explanation (sold to the public via corp "news"). In the US, actual facts have been relegated to the realm of kookiness. Only people who believe lies are socially approved & accepted as 'normal.'

One amazing thing about human nature is we tend to hold on to hope no matter how bad things get, but I think by the end Carlin had lost all hope he even said as much in an interview. Is it possible things will never get better no matter how hard we try? He was an atheist so probably the biggest comfort for him was the belief that he would some day cease to be and it would be all over.
