The Minister for the Environment speaks of the thematic issues in the eighteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18 http://bit.ly/9jMuEw). She shares examples of what can be done to tackle Sustainable Mining, Chemicals Management and Transport.
Some examples:
- establishment of an agency for the protection of the environment,
- environmental impact assessment programmes (including socio-economic assessment),
- reclamation bonds,
- passing bills addressing the use of toxic chemicals,
- import permits,
- passing laws preventing the importation of second hand vehicles that are above 10 years.

The Minister also mentions that waste management remains problematic due to the lack of expertise to assist local councils in the knowledge on how to manage waste.
