@pootythe5th Sadly many people will never understand that, I agree with you, the Catholic church is a faith that is based in good principles, there are millions of people who are Catholic, now, that the priest or other authorities from the church are so corrupted, it doesn't mean that the whole institution is dirty or corrupt..come on people it doesn't really take too much brain work to understand that, is just common sense. People cannot go generalizing everything or condemning everything.!!

Napoleon was great.
I don't know why Spaniards didn't understand that Napoleon was a liberator, not a conqueror. Napoleon invaded Spain to kick the Bourbons tyrans and save the people of Spain.
Vive l'empereur.

@pootythe5th - Except that the "horrible acts" of the medieval Church sprung from an ideological absolutism that STILL exists. It is not the acts themselves which are so terrifying, but the dogma which enables them. Dogma which is alive and well, manifesting most recently in this new wave of theocratic fringe conservative politicians.
Anyway, I have not seen this film, but Goya is a favorite of mine. Can anyone offer an opinion on how Forman's interpretation holds with historical accuracy?

It is true the Goya witnessed all of the events of the Spanish Inquisition. I was surprised that the movie did not portray him as crazy as his paintings. The ironic thing is ... his paintings tell the truth and are extremely rational, no matter how irrational they may seem to the eye.

@int1901 both
I love the dark comedy and ironic elements of the ending. I thought that Lorenzo's execution and, the scene with the kids singing and Alicia holding Lorenzo's hand were two the best in the film.
