Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio was born in Milan in 1571, the son of an administrator and architect to the Martchese of Caravaggio. When he was 13, he was apprenticed for four years to a student artist who had studied under Titian. Eight years later when he was 21, Caravaggio fled Milan and headed to Rome after getting into trouble fighting with a police officer. He was destitute when he arrived and had to crank out some pedestrian work for hack artists, but a couple of years later turned out the first of his important works, ""The Fortune Teller." It sold for practically nothing, but thanks to its unusual theme, it created a flurry in Roman society. "The Cardsharps" followed and his reputation was assured. He kept painting AND getting into trouble. Because he was always ready for a bar brawl, he was forced to keep moving during his short life. He killed a man in 1606 and fled to Naples for a few months, then on to Malta and Sicily. He died of a sudden fever in 1610 at the age of 38, but he left some dark and magnificent brooding work for posterity. For music, we have Matteo Campanella's "Etude 84 de Sagreras," performed on guitar.
