Venkatraghavan and Steve Bucknor umpired this game. For Bucknor, it was special because it was his first ever home match. Unfortunately, the conditions didn't allow him to stay for one session.

The right decision to call off the game, but I don't think it fair to call it the "worst pitch of all time". Firstly, look at all the scorecards of pre-1914 test matches, where sticky wickets and low scores were common. Secondly, I dont think the Edgbaston pitch of the 1995 test (e.g.) was much better. It would be interesting to speculate what would have happened if Atherton had decided to field after winning the toss. Perhaps with Caddick and Fraser bowling the pitch would have looked ok ..

Right decision to abandon the match. Nothing pussy-ish about that - it's simply an unplayable pitch. Doesn't matter who you are, you're going to suck ass on a pitch like that. 100% unpredictable.
