How to join live stitches using a Russian Graft, using a crochet hook. Russian Grafting is easy, simple and quick, when finished it seemingly disappears into the ridges of garter stitch, so as to be almost invisible. Traditionally used to graft short sections of a shawl border ... it can be used successfully in other types of knitting.

  • thanks - i love this! can you share the name of the bootie pattern?

  • @cochondinde99 the bootie pattern is Hodge - available free on Ravely.com

  • I wonder also, is this ok for stockinette stitch? I'd rather do this to the back of my "Mythos", rather than grafting with kitchener.

  • @chilloften it most certainly would work with stocking stitch, the only thing is you will have a little plait of the stitches where the join is. Depending on the item .. and gauge that might look nice, or odd, one consideration might be to work this from the wrong side so that plait ends up inside ... it won't be as seamless as a sewn graft or kitchener .. but it will be more stable and firmer. Cheers.

  • oh this is so clever, I've never seen this before and I knit a lot, thank you!

  • I thought that when i found out about the technique ...

    thanks :D

  • This was the perfect joining I needed for the shoulder of a top I made. Thank you so much! I like this MUCH better than the Kitchner stitch!

  • This is fricken cool! I've never seen that done before.I make alot of socks and booties,so i can't wait to try this technic:o)

  • Wow, this is really great, thanks so much for sharing this great technique!

  • This is so helpful, thank you for sharing. I wish I'd seen this last night, before i ruined my first sock with a messed up Kitchener attempt. I've often wondered why more knitters don't use a crochet hook for certain tasks...but I'm not that experienced so I've followed their lead. Thanks again!
