Wall Collapse. Boy dead

Dickson (14) of Paithar, a small village just 10 kms from Lawngtlai town in Mizoram was crushed to death when a wall behind him collapsed on 26.2.2009 at 11:00 AM. Dickson was on a school sports meet at Lawngtlai CYLA playground when the accident occured.

Investigations showed that the wall (4ft high) was part of the 40 fts Public Gallery constructed under Mizoram State Sports Council in 2006. The contractor was Sanghmingliani of Lunglei, Chanmari and the Contract Worker was Thangzuala of Zobawk. However, It seems that the actual contractor did not do the works, instead selling it off to some other person, the fact we dont know.

The contractor did not use iron-rod for the construction of the gallery. Instead bamboos panes were installed instead of iron rods. Summer came, then the bamboos dried up, leaving the structure dangerously unsteady. And when a few students leaned against it, the structure collapsed crushing the boy who was sitting behind it. Dickson suffered a broken neck and his head was severely injured on the back. He died minutes after he was rushed to the Hospital.
