From the 1988 Royal Vairety show. I'm stuck with some of the cast. I know that:

Valjean- Colm Wilkinson
Marius- Michael Ball
Eponine- Frances Ruffelle
Thénardier- Barry James
Mme Thénardier- Sue Jane Tanner

...but I'm unsure of rest, all help would be greatly appreciated!

  • I think they intended on Frances but I have a feeling she was pregnant at the time.

  • It's Simon Bowman as Enji and Don Gallagher as Javert. Oh, and it's FrancES Ruffelle, because last time I looked she wasn't a man ;)

  • Oh, I love Simon Bowman as Enjolras in this clip. I wish he appeared on an official recording. And I wish he were Marius in the OBC instead of David Bryant (if it wasn't at all possible for Michael Ball to be Marius), because his performance in the 1987 Royal Variety was awesome as well.

Michael Ball is, was, and always will be THE Marius.

I <3 Colm. Nuff said. I like Frances as Eponine, but I prefer Lea. Sutton Foster was very good as well.

  • that is my fav Mme thenadier & i like the javet in this and btw colm wilkinson is just amazing

  • @flyingrainbowpigs Yeah, probably with Eliza Doolittle.

  • Who is Javert? I've read through the comments and peeps are saying all sorts of different people: John Diedrich, Terrance Man, Don Gallagher lol??????????? -Who actually is he?? :)

  • AS much as I idolise Simon Bowman, he just isn't as good michael Maguire at Enjolras :(

  • @yonyue So had Michael Ball. He played Raoul opposite Claire Moore and Rebecca Caine.

  • @flyingrainbowpigs are you sure it's from 1988? Both Colm Wilkinson, Michael Ball and Frances Rufelle had left the show by that time.

It could be from the royal variety performance in 1991, which was a kind of tribute to Cameron Mackintosh. That would explain why a lot of the original cast is back.

  • what a cast, ab to see that it made me cry. There cid:BC02A0A8-2D7A-4C2B-A846-834BE0CFB2D0/ECOPYSCANNER_EXCHANGE_10222010-112832.PDFis only one Frances Ruffelle -she broke the mould-Alan Armstrong too as Mr T -oh happy days. xx

  • @madgeson Confirmed - Rebecca had left for Phantom by end of 87.

  • Yes it's Simon

  • Is it Simon Bowman?
