For the first time since at least the early 1980s, WPVI is not using the voice of Jeff Kaye to open Delaware Valley's Leading News Program. Jeff's voice had been sadly decaying markedly in recent years; his most recent voiceover recordings were pulled off air after less than one week.

The voice of Charlie Van Dyke now accompanies the familiar strains of Move Closer To Your World. I gotta admit I was skeptical of the prospect of having Van Dyke do the opens; but I have to say, he sounds really good here and his voice does fit the tone of the music. It's a marked improvement from what they've been using since 1999.

The new recordings appear to use the same talent lineup as the aborted open attempts from February. Rick Williams, Monica Malpass, and Cecily Tynan are named for the 5pm open and 5:30 rejoin, while it's just Jim Gardner named for the 6. (Note that all of them are off tonight...)

No word on what they're gonna do at 6.

  • If Rick, Monica and Jim were all off this day, why were they mentioned in the close as if they reported? Im lost.

  • @teamjackattack10 6's anchors always mention the main presenting talent in their closes, regardless of whether they actually appeared. They've done it in the exact same way for years. (Remember, this is the station that still labels its live shots "Action Cam" shots.)

Personally, I like the more formal feel. It helps me remember the talent at 6, and it's better than the rushed closes other stations do.

  • Charlie > Jeff. Charlie is the leading news Imager. Jeff has done very little; only did opens for WPVI.

  • @samjarris If you're comparing today? Then yes, Charlie > Jeff.

20 years ago? I'd say about equal. When Jeff was at his peak he had tremendous power in his voice. Not the growl of Van Dyke, but still a magnificent voice.

And up until a decade or so ago, Jeff was pretty much the #1 or #2 voice there alongside Paul Norton. They were using his voice out of tradition, though his glory days had sadly long past.

  • @teamjackattack10 Because they are the anchors usually on at that time. They say their names and then thank the entire Action News Team.

  • Brian Taff is a good news anchor.

  • @HulkieG Thanks for the explanation

  • Jeff>Charlie
