From the PBS series Great Cars. You can still kick off a debate by asking how it got its name, but there's no arguging the role the Jeep played in World War II, where it became the American soldier's best friend.

The unusual looking vehicle served as combat car, postal carrier, snowplow and ambulance. It could forge a stream, dig trenches, churn the water in a washtub, and serve as a wedding altar.

After the war, it was thought this amazing vehicle would fade away like an old soldier. But today the Jeep and Jeep-like SUVs are among the world's top sellers.
