A very nice '58 although somehow the '58's never seemed (or looked?) like they should be "hot" cars, more of a "show" car. The '58 was my all-time favorite Chevy although my 1st car (bought in August '64) was a '57 Bel Air. I liked the '59-'60 dash better than the '58 but you've got a really terrific car. Attended Santa Fe High School (Santa Fe Springs, CA.) from 1961-1965 and the 409 Chevy was one of the big three (along with the 413 Dodge/Plymouth and the 406 Ford. You should be proud!

I had 2 yes 2 58 Del Rays and they did have a back seat so i differ with that but the only way i got them to run was go with a 283 60 over 2.2 heads mallory hedman headers removed that fking X and went with a 1 piece drive shaft oversive 4.56 posi and fking blew all the 409s and 348s i ever raced away 12.00s on pump gas.

wow. very nice. god i love late 50's styling. from all manufacturers. so so sweet. well all except dodge. they were ugly as shit but they made up for it in the late 60's i guess. anyway what a gorgeous car you have.

@4GooMan you are half right... they had it until chrysler brought out the 413 and 426 wedges in the early 60s, I believe the 426 came in 63... and then it turned 440 and then the 426 hemi showed up in 64 in some factory race cars
Had me a '58 ragtop with a 348 tri-power in the mid 60s. Once that progressive linkage was set up right, it went like a bat outta hell. But I hated the X frame and the two piece driveshaft - dumbest mistake Chevy ever made. Yours looks like a real screamer - if the differential holds up. 90/10 shocks put the weight where it needs to be, but I remember how easy it was to tear up a ring and/or pinion. Stock radiator good enough for the 409? What kinda gas you usin'? Lookin' Good!

@MrStrictlyStock Hey, thanks for the comments. I agree, X frame is not 1st choice but at the time it made passengers sit lower. Now I've got a 4 core radiator with no more heating problems. 11.5:1 compression makes things testy. I use Sonoco 110 octane, the rich diet's worth it...it smells pretty good. So far no problem with the 4.88 posi but I've got spares. I had 3-2's when it was a 348 and they worked great!

Nice looking 58! I heard that the 348s and 409s are becoming increasingly popular for marine use. They make great anchors! LOL! All kidding aside, They were not one of Chevy's better engine designs. I had a 59 Impala with a 348 and 3 dueces from the factory. Impressive to look at, and it would fly but it was a nightmare from day one. I later switched to a 4 bbl. 348s & 409s are very collectable and becoming scarce. I've always preferred the small blocks. The possibilities with them are endless!

@Pandadustl I have to agree....today's SBC are awesome, even if they use FI. But that 409 was king in it's day and those are the days I think about.

Is that a Biscayne or a DelRay?
CrazyWoody1989 2 years ago
@CrazyWoody1989 That's a Del Ray Business Coupe, no radio/heater/back seat/roll up windows in back. A real factory hot rod even though it came with a 348 with tri-power and a 3 speed stick w/4:11s.
