I have used this song with elementary school kids, developmentally disabled adults and with adults who are just learning English.

  • The third grade (age 7,8,9)class was divided into teams. Each team learned one verse. Of course everyone sang the vowel sound and danced while singing the "when two vowels" chorus.

  • I think that changing the "Die" to "pie" would be a good idea, I didn't really want to have to explain to my three year old kid death just yet but had to anyway.

  • Thanks! I had not thought of "pie". Yes, it's a much friendlier word.

  • This rule does not apply to every case

    what about:dict-io-nary or school??

    am I right?

  • Phonic "rules" come AFTER the language is created, so they don't really "rule" the way spelling works. Unfortunately! ;-) For ESL adults I actually use this song more as an exercise in making the sounds. For third graders it's just a good excuse to dance.

  • but well done having the patience(<==another exception(<==and another)) for working with the special needs, I know I couldn't.

  • You make a valid point about exceptions, and thanks for the kind comment. I don't emphasize phonic rules much since the language came before the rules.

I read somewhere that English comes from both the Celtic and Norman languages so it's probably too complicated for rules.

  • i like your video pretty awesome =)) keep it up

  • this is crazy

  • @baigandine yes, but i suspect this schoolteacher doesn't know a damn thing about phonetics and has never encountered linguistics in her life. she should not be teaching this if that is the case.

  • @habs4life9 It's helpful to have a "working knowledge" of phonetics, and one doesn't need advanced knowledge to help someone "get by." A lot of the rules in English aren't absolutely anyway. As long as that's understood there's no harm in promulgating rules.

  • LOLOLZZZ great song...a little complicated for me even...but your singing was pretty funny.

  • This is an interesting video, though it's a high pitch. First I felt the intensive sound, little by little it became tender. Anyway, it's a good stuff. Hay, buddy, post more!

  • @cathysfiddle stop talking about "phonics" and talk about "phonetics" which is the real complex stuff. or do you not know anything about phonetics? if you never studied linguistics, you have no business teaching stuff like this and you're disgracefully uninformed.

  • @cathysfiddle some of the things that are being called "vowels" in this song are actually diphthongs. do you know what a diphthong is? will you ever bother to teach your students the difference between a vowel and a diphthong, or will you just continue to mislead kids by calling them all vowels when they're clearly phonetically distinct? this video teaches wrong information and if you use it to teach you're lying to kids. if i were teaching your class i'd be linguistically accurate.

  • @cathysfiddle so you're a teacher. do you know ANYTHING about linguistics? if you did, you'd know that this is bullshit and it's lying to kids. when i first got int linguistics i found out what vowels and consonants REALLY were, and i realized my fucking teachers had been lying to me for 13 god damn years. if you don't know linguistics you should not be teaching, so i really hope you have some background in linguistics if you're teaching this stuff.
