The Stones were in Los Angeles in early 1972, recording at famed Sunset Sound.

The Stones had spent part of the previous year living as tax exiles in the south of France, where they had recorded the basic tracks for their next album in the basement of Keith Richards' rented villa at Nellcôte. The following year in California, those tracks became the core of "Exile On Main Street."

In Los Angeles, photographer Robert Frank used Super 8mm to film the Stones as they walked along Main Street in LA's skid row.
(See: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=east+5th+st.+%26+sou... )
He also filmed them in Bel Air, a posh suburb nearby.
(See: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=l... .)
Frames from this reel were used throughout the cover and inner sleeves of "Exile."

The film was cut into short strips, perhaps for Frank's convenience in his darkroom. When those strips were re-assembled, nearly all sequences were out of sequence. Frank also edited the 8mm film with other footage he had shot of New York City's skid row, The Bowery.

FOR HISTORICAL PURPOSES, only the Rolling Stones parts are shown here and they have been re-arranged and slowed down.

  • I'm a lifelong fan and I'm 46 and can't wait to hear the UMG remaster of EOMS and the new 10 tracks cause all the other UMG remasters to my ears, really do make the songs sound even better. The Stones will never be equalled IMO. They've got all the best ingredients in talent. To my ears, their music never ages. It's the craziest thing. I tip my hat to you guyz - love ur work. Can't imagine not having your work to rock out to.

  • My favorite album ever!!
