I don't think their intentions were to make it near mainstream. It's just a design gag that has no real use. It's just to show off to the guests. :P
I wouldn't want to hold the handle all the time anyway, it looks so slow.

But perhaps it's possible to do that even faster and thus go through doors in like half the time.

Its probably much easier to kick the door open with that lock rather that the normal.
