So is the "353" the power rating? Is that how it works? And were all D9's 6-cyl turbos, or was that like a top-of-the-line model? Love old diesels, anyway. Well...gas engines are alright too, but they both have their attractions. =)

A D-8 around 1975, used for logging, very cold winter morning start, such a nice sound when that baby catches and gets ready for 8 hours of work!!

as far as I know the 353 has no particular meaning other than to designate what engine it is. Some other engines of that era were the D318 and D315, so the idea of it relating to hp is not viable. All production low drive D9's were turbo 6's, the G and H models also had an aftercooler.

@SANTACRUZDRIVER8 It's after the turbo so it doesn't really matter too much. I'll patch it up once it's back in the yard, not worth dragging the welder out into the field to fix. A new exhaust elbow from Cat would probably cost more than the machine is worth LOL
