It was one of the most popular English-language novels of its time, and helped establish Cooper as one of the first world-famous American writers.The story takes place in 1757 during the French and Indian War, when France and Great Britain battled for control of the American and Canadian colonies. iroquois & natives as a rule did not harm "the innocents"-& women/kids were adopted into tribe to strengthen it- unlike white soldiers (see wounded knee)who could not adopt native women/kids bc of racial prejudice not wanting to "darken" the white race- alcohol/drugs changed the nature of war for natives-harming a woman prisoner brought death penalty to a native man by his own tribe of matriarchy grandmothers judges
