To put things into perspective, Serge was a chain smoking, hard drinking genius who at the time of this video clip had over 30 years of musical accomplishments to his credit.

Whitney a beautiful vocal phenom, also ended up a drunk and an addict, and like Serge probably expired before she should have had she exhibited a bit of self control.

He wasn't being a "pig", he was just being Serge. As surprised as Whitney was, she seemed to take the comments tounge-in-cheek. Everyone laughed. No harm.

I agree with you that what he said was wrong, but I still think- without condoning it- that Gainsbourg knew she could handle it; and Houstons bemusement at the embarassing narcisstistic drunk was more effective and career enhancing than a headlining slap.

She's not a 'genius,' she's just a technically great but not very soulful singer for whoever likes that style of silly pop music that she sings. She's no Aretha Franklin or even Norah Jones. She's also not a songwriter. Serge, on the other hand, is a very great songwriter even with extremely limited vocal ability, one of the best in the French language (even if he's of Russian Jew origin), but also a no-class degenerate, misogynist motherfucker for humiliating her like that on national TV.
