Linden Lab founder and CEO Philip Rosedale discusses the unique creative opportunities offered to users of the online virtual world "Second Life."

-----

Second Life: What Do We Learn If We Digitize EVERYTHING?

What is real life coming to owe digital life?

After a couple years in the flat part of exponential growth, the steep part is now arriving for the massive multi-player online world construction kit called "Second Life." With 1.7 million accounts, membership in "Second Life" is growing by 20,000 per day. The current doubling rate of "residents" is 7 months, still shortening, which means the growth is (for now) hyperexponential.

For this talk the founder and CEO of "Second Life," Philip Rosedale, tried something new for him - a simultaneous demo and talk. His online avatar, "Philip Linden," was on the screen showing things while the in-theater Philip Rosedale was conjecturing about what it all means. "This is a game of 'Can I interest you more in what I'm saying than what's going on on the screen?'"

He showed how new arrivals go through the "gateway" experience of creating their own onscreen avatar, explaining that because intense creativity is so cheap, easy, and experimental, the online personas become strongly held. "You can have multiple avatars in 'Second Life,' but the overall average is 1.25 avatars per person." The median age of users is 31, and the oldest users spend the most time in the world (over 80 hours per week for 10 percent of the residents). - The Long Now Foundation

  • Yes , some of us DO still Create inworld, and constantly changes ,like me visiting this amazing world almost every day! This platform of creativity is a must for me and others becuase RL doesnt support this kind of creativity or opportunities.

If you arent content with whats offering you. LEAVE, or STAY and Create what You miss or look for or try to find it in RL. I didnt and I am very happy to have SL, thank you P Rosedale :)

  • fuck phil and fuck second life and fuck linden labs.

  • fuck you creator of youtube mother fucker

  • SL = fake world for fake ppl.

  • Gosh someone that cute can be that smart?

  • @TheSteelSkulls

Hmm...I'm part of "everyone" and I didn't come into SL to "fuck". I didn't even know you could until I got there. And that still isn't my reason for being there. Like MOST mature adults there...I'm revelling in the ability to create/build and run a business that makes money.

Sounds like you're not quite as motivated, perhaps.

  • excellent work!

  • It's 2010 and everything is still the same. Not working at all.

As long as you pay they are happy. It's all about money, nothing else, no matter what they say. They don't listen to the users, come up with useless gizmo's no one uses.

If they cannot come up with a decent sollution, they blame it's residents.

So how come WOW doesn't have all these problems? Think about that!

So go fuck yourself Philip Rosedale, for being ignorant to all your customers.

  • Everyone joins Second life to meet the opposite sex and FUCK. Everything else is a bonus.

  • This guy caught my attention mainly in the way he promotes/sales-talks his product much like a pastor preaching a religion. The validity of what he says aside, he's one heck of a salesman CEO.

Btw, nice try on all the virtual creativity talk, just not sure what "genuine" educationists and artists have to say.
