Music: Brandon McCune and Joey Oakley (live accompaniment)
Premiere: July 2008- Dance Theater Workshop (New York)
Dancers: Otis Donovan Herring, Juel Lane, DuJuan Popeye Smart Jr., and Keon C Thoulouis
Set in the year 1915 (50 years after the Civil War and 50 years before the Civil Rights Movement) in a small room , this work focuses on 4 young black males who decide whether to stay in the South (the only place they've ever known), or migrate North (to the place they've never see). In a time where truth, justice, and peace, are all against them, these men meet, stepping into their leadership and creating the path for change. With poetry written by Dana Gourrier (performed by J. Michael Kinsey), Matchstick explores the conversations between these men through bold, earthbound movements.
